Article categories are an important component of wiki articles. They serve to help readers navigate through different types of articles and find other similar articles that could be of interest to them. However, on many wikis, articles are often cluttered with categories that don't serve their intended purpose, and are just there as nothing more than large conglomerations of text. Therefore, to reduce the amount of repetitive and unnecessary categories cluttering articles, only a handful of category types are permitted on this wiki. These categories will be specified below, based on article type. If you believe a category type should be included, contact Antiliun to discuss the matter.
General
The following categories can be applied on every article on the Dinosaur Revolution Wiki:
- Dinosaur Revolution Wiki
For articles under 500 bytes (refer to Special:ShortPages for a comprehensive list), the following category should be added:
- Article stubs
- Make sure to add the stub template, too (simply type {{Stub}} in the source editor to add the stub template).
Creatures
The following categories can be applied to every creature article:
- Creatures
- Creatures in [Series name or Episode name]
- Creatures from [Continent name]
- Creatures from the [Time period name]
- Creatures from the [Era name]
- [Animal's diet type]
- e.g., Carnivores, Herbivores, Omnivores, etc.
- Categories relating to a creature's taxonomy.
- Vertebrate or Invertebrate
- [Creature's taxonomic class]
- e.g. Reptiles, Mammals, etc.
- For the purpose of this wiki, dinosaurs articles should not be put in the Reptiles category. Although this is taxonomically incorrect, this is so navigation would be more user-friendly for readers since a reader clicking on the Dinosaurs category is likely to be looking for articles on dinosaurs instead of articles on the multitude of other extinct reptiles featured in Dinosaur Revolution.
- [Creature's clade name]
- e.g., Dinosaurs, Pterosaurs, etc.
- [Creature's sub-clade name]
- e.g., Theropods, Sauropods, Ornithischians, etc.
- [Creature's family name]
- e.g., Tyrannosaurs, Diplodocids, Ceratopsians, etc.
- Don't get too specific on this one. We don't need a creature's full phylogenetic classification here on the wiki.
- For the purpose of this wiki, bird articles should not be put in the Dinosaurs category. Although this is taxonomically incorrect, this is so navigation would be more user-friendly for readers since a reader clicking on the Birds category is likely to be looking for articles on actual birds instead of articles on non-avian dinosaurs.
- Categories relating to a creature's lifestyle
- e.g., Terrestrial, aquatic, or aerial
